History
In 1902, the Engadine banker Johann Töndury had a private villa built on the best hillside in Vulpera, whose tourist trade was flourishing. The architect was Karl Koller, who became one of the most successful hotel architects in the Engadine valley (e.g. Hotel Suvretta House in St.Moritz, 1812). The villa’s imaginative architecture is typical of the period, in that different construction styles from various eras were used together with elements typical of the region. However, Töndury never lived in the villa. From 1906, the building was used as a hotel annexe, a sanatorium and finally a disco. It was only in 1999, after careful restoration and reconstruction, that the castle-like mansion woke from its slumber.
